The castle is one of the most important castles in the western part of the Puster valley. It is located in Val Pusteria/Pustertal, a magnificent valley in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, belonging to two nature reserves: the Fanes-Sennes-Brice Nature Park and the Rieserferner-Arn Nature Park. The area also includes several valleys with villages surrounded by beautiful scenery away from the mass tourism of the Plan de Corones/Kronplatz area, such as the Kasies/Gsis valley, the Anterselva/Antholz valley and the Aurina/Arntal valley. The largest town in Val Pusteria/Pustertal is Brunico/Bruneck, a lively town at 838 meters above sea level, famous for its castle and medieval main street. But there are other towns in the valley, closely linked by common traditional art and history, surrounded by untouched nature. In winter, the Pustertal Valley is an ideal destination for those who love winter sports. There are 4 winter recreation areas at your disposal: the Speikboden center in Campo Tures, the Klausberg center in the Aurina Valley, the Rio Pusteria ski resort, which was once called Gitchberg-Jochtal, in Maranz and Valles, and the Plan de Corones ski resort in the surrounding area Brunico, which is part of Dolomiti Superski.
The castle is located above a hill at an altitude of 956 m above sea level on a rocky cliff and was built in 1091. This fact not only makes the castle one of the oldest in Val Pusteria, but also represents one of the most important buildings in the western region. In history, the castle was the patrimony of noble families. In the 15th century the castle was the seat of the court. After the founding of the city of Bruneck, the Counts of Gorizia actively promoted the castle, especially in order to create a counterbalance to the development of the city of Bruneck. In 1678, the castle and courtyard passed into the hands of the Königle von Ehrenburg family and remained their property until 1955.
Today St. Michael's Castle is privately owned and offered for sale. Currently, the castle consists of two stone towers surrounded by a fence. Inside you will find furnished interiors, completely usable. A newly built helipad completes this magnificent fortress.
