In history, the castle was the patrimony of noble families. In the 15th century the castle was the seat of the court. After the founding of the city of Bruneck, the Counts of Gorizia actively promoted the castle, especially in order to create a counterbalance to the development of the city of Bruneck. In 1678, the castle and courtyard passed into the hands of the Königle von Ehrenburg family and remained their property until 1955.
