Authorities in the municipality of Agrafa, central Greece, are greatly concerned about the constant population decline - it has decreased by 20% over the past ten years.
What are they planning to do about it? From the beginning of next year, pay €3 thousand to all permanent residents who have a child while living in the region (currently they pay €1.5 thousand).
The municipality is even ready to pay the cost of artificial insemination and the cost of childbirth.
But it seems that the Greeks themselves are not very keen to move to the region, and money does not inspire them - healthcare is poorly developed, it takes at least an hour and a half to drive from the mountain villages of Agrafa to the nearest hospital. The situation with jobs is even less clear.
Of course, the Greeks are not the first to try to attract young people to sparsely populated areas through monetary compensation. In Italy, for example, the famous “houses for 1 euro” program has been operating for many years.
